[00115] As used herein, a "candidate agent" refers to any entity which is normally not present or not present at the levels being administered to a cell, tissue or subject. A candidate agent can be selected from a group comprising: chemicals; small organic or inorganic molecules; nucleic acid sequences; nucleic acid analogues; proteins; peptides; aptamers; peptidomimetic, peptide derivative, peptide analogs, antibodies; intrabodies; biological macromolecules, extracts made from biological materials such as bacteria, plants, fungi, or animal cells or tissues; naturally occurring or synthetic compositions or functional fragments thereof. In some embodiments, the candidate agent is any chemical entity or moiety, including without limitation synthetic and naturally-occurring non-proteinaceous entities. In certain embodiments the candidate agent is a small molecule having a chemical moiety. For example, chemical moieties include unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aromatic, or heterocyclyl moieties including macrolides, leptomycins and related natural products or analogues thereof.

Candidate agents can be known to have a desired activity and/or property, or can be selected from a library of diverse compounds.
